Sleep on It
A basic concept in the examination of Wisdom and the Seven Intelligences is that the various Intelligences (Qs) are all interrelated. A newspaper article highlight the relationship between our physical intelligence (PQ) and memory (part of IQ).
An article in the West Australian (3.10.08, p. 16) notes that sleep plays a more important part in memory than previously thought.
Recent research has shown that while people sleep, the brain uses the time to store important information and discard unimportant detail. The research, by Professor Robert Stickgold of Harvard University, showed that sleep strengthened recently formed memories and blended them into networks of older memories.
‘He [Prof. Stickgold] said the brain also used sleep to sift through memories such as scenes people saw that day, to remember the important “emotional” memories and dismiss unimportant ones.’
Two thoughts to take away:
- If you don’t get enough sleep (more than six hours) you won’t get the improvements in memory and competence which come from the brain’s processing while you’re asleep. Your PQ affects your IQ and XQ.
- This report again emphasises the importance of emotionally charged memories—the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart. EQ matters.
